Sodiuium Propionate is an odorless white powder or crystal. Occasionally there will be a slight smell of propionic acid. It is stable under the exposure of heat and light. Sodium Propionate is highly soluble in water, but insoluble in ethanol or ether. Under acidic environments, it generates free propionic ions with a powerful antiseptic effect. 
Studies indicate that Sodium Propionate is one of the safest food additives used in the food industry.

Product Applications:

[1] Used as a masking agent in leather making to improve the alkali resistance of leather and the uniformity of tanning.
[2] Sodium propionate is also an acid-type food preservative, and its antibacterial effect is affected by environmental pH. The minimum inhibitory concentration is 0.01% at pH 5.0 and 0.5% at pH 6.5. It has a strong inhibitory effect on various molds, gram-negative bacilli or aerobic bacillus in acid medium. It has a special effect on preventing the production of aflatoxin, but it is almost ineffective on yeast.
[3] In the food industry, it can be used for the preservation of cakes. The usage amount is 2.5g/kg (calculated as propionic acid, the same below); the maximum usage amount is 50g/kg in 3%~5% aqueous solution soaking bayberry. It can also be used as an antifungal agent for feed.
[4] Food, feed and antiseptic and antifungal agents. The general addition amount is 0.1-0.3%.
[5] Cosmetic preservatives. It has a wide range of antibacterial effects on molds and yeasts. The antibacterial effect is particularly obvious in acid hydrolysis. The addition amount in cosmetics is usually not more than 2%. Insecticides and antifungal agents. Determination of transaminase. Used as a masking agent in tanning to improve the alkali resistance of leather and the uniformity of tanning.
